While Volvo’s marketing was busy consuming various “natural” plants and promoting whales, then Daimler-Benz was promoting the newly completed 220-series S-Class sedan late 1998. This is what that promo looked like (and it’s very German):

For added kicks, here’s the 1999 VHS owners’ walkthrough all of us W220 owners received after taking delivery of our modern marvels:

Whether it’s standard satellite navigation and tri-zone climate control, radar cruise control, the world’s first smart-key, heated and cooled massaging seats, rain-sensing wipers, the structural engineering needed for a less massive aluminum flagship sedan, ventilated and cross-drilled brake rotors, voice recognition, airmatic, parktronic, 8 airbags, or the most advanced computer systems in a car yet created, the W220 was a PIONEER for the luxury segment. Some vehicles have yet to adopt its technology! I can sit here and talk all day long about the innovation (and patents).

This was a spaceship in 1999 and that one first impression its Brilliant Silver body made on me will forever remain. Isn’t it interesting to see a 1990’s take on the future of technology?

Daimler-Benz was spot-on.

What a cool find.

Do you own a W220? If so, how has ownership been? I love these cars.

Yes, I have had the pleasure of owning one (as I said above).

It’s an intimate learning experience but after you educate yourself about how to take care of a 220, then it’s all fine. They basically don’t like to be abused. 220s are very special to me.

Mine turns 16 years old next month. It was delivered in November 1999.

Nice! I would love to take advantage of the depreciation one day.

Older ones hit the bottom of their depreciation a couple years ago. They will stay there a while but years from now the value will probably increase greatly as people begin to realize how monumental this car was in automotive history.

Finding a V12 one in Mexico is hard as hell. Close to no one owned S-Classes here, and the ones who do are keeping them.

Is importing them an option?

The only cars you can import have to be 8 years old and have a VIN starting with a number. So only the cars built in Canada, US Mexico or Latin America apply unfortunately.
